Pipi the stray cat already ate well.
The plump, black-and-white cat lives near a favorite street cat hangout, a night market in Taipei, Taiwan. But now Pipi and his fellow felines are getting fancy. They eat at a “Midnight Cafeteria”—a little dining house designed just for cats.
People launched the Midnight Cafeteria project in September. They scattered 45 small wooden houses across Taipei. The idea behind this extensive “cat-eteria”: Give cats a place to eat and rest . . . without making a mess.
“In Taiwan there are a lot of people who feed strays. But often they leave a mess, and then the public becomes annoyed by it,” says researcher Chen Chen-yi, who started the program.
The Midnight Cafeteria project started in math teacher Hung Pei-ling’s neighborhood. Now Hung and about 20 of her neighbors buy cat food and clean the cafés. Hung also captures cats that are injured or need spaying. She takes them to the vet, and then returns them to their haunts. Neighbors have also delivered small cushions and decorated cardboard boxes to add to the houses.
You may live in a place where people think of pets as part of the family and where every cat or dog must have a defined home, human care, toys, teeth cleaning, and shots. But in other parts of the world, people do not believe these animals belong in the house. Historically, dogs have been a source not of cuddles but of food in South Korea. That’s a far cry from the “Dog Mom” bumper stickers you might spy in other parts of the world! Often, our perspective about a way of doing things—such as how we treat animals—is shaped by what we’ve become used to. Elsewhere, others may have a very different perspective.
Some nations take a more middle-of-the-road stance about animals. In Istanbul, Turkey, people don’t usually own cats. But they willingly take care of strays. They put bowls of food and water on the sidewalk and donate money when a stray needs to visit the vet. Cats are part of the fabric of the city’s culture—like squirrels or pigeons, only cuddlier. Something similar is happening in Taipei.
The cats certainly aren’t complaining. Pipi and two of his friends enjoy attention from Hung and another volunteer on a Sunday afternoon, eat at the cafeteria, then settle in for a lazy morning nap.
And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. — Luke 13:29
thats funny. I have a cat but
thats funny. I have a cat but she is just a house cat.
Second Comment
This. Is. Ridiculous. (Sorry if I offended anyone ).I mean, it's funny and a good idea I suppose for strays but...they could put that money into better things, like saving starving people.
@ Everyone
I like the 3rd picture in the slide show with the cat (He looked like he was helping the lady get his food!)
@ Belwyn
Or he's stealing it...but maybe I'm on the wrong pic.
two of my cats were strays
Yeah two of my cats are strays one is an adopted cat so three cats in total.
@ Bethy
Haha, yeah, maybe! : )
The Cat in the fourth picture
The Cat in the fourth picture is really cool, with that diamond in its nose! And the one in the fifth is HUGE!
@ KN
It has a diamond in it's nose? The fifth picture cat is big!
P.S. This is Caro
I LOVE CATS!!!!!! They are SOOOO cute!!!!!!!! I agree, KN
*____*
Wow. I agree with Bethy that they could be using this money in a better way. Charities for humans are things. I mean.... they're CATS. Evil, plotting, selfish cats. (If you're cat is not {or doesn't SEEM to be} evil, plotting, and selfish, please share XD)
*facepalm*
*facepalm*
I think this is awesome, all
I think this is awesome, all you people saying ''this is ridiculous and a waste'' need to brighten up a little. Its not like the Taiwanese government is funding this or whatever, its nice people who have some money and time to spare.
@Phillip G P.S. This is Caro
I agree, it's not people who don't have enough money have to fund these, it's just people who have extra and they choose to do it.
i admit it's a little silly
i admit it's a little silly sounding, but no one wants to have dead cats lying on the streets. I don't like the idea of starving cats, and God told man to take care of the animals so i think this cafe is a cool idea. i also think a lot of people like cats because it's nice to see something more selfish than ourselves.
@Above
Ok that is just weird. I am not fan of cats at all. We just have a few wild cats that keep the mice down, and then my sister has one OUTDOOR cat that is very mentally retarded, who everyone else want to mysteriously get rid of because she poops all over the porch and such, but my sister wants to keep....arg..... But yeah I think that a cat cafe is just a little, uh, strange and not necessary.

Thank you for reading, My name is Dessie Dog. Me and some of my comrades are planning to storm the cafe in a week. If any of you tail-chasing, stick- fetching pups want to join us, be my guest. We all can see that the cats of this earth do not deserve this sort of luxury. Join now!

@Dessie Dog
I would bring my dog, but she's never actually met a cat, so I don't know how she would react... She doesn't like other dogs (unless they are boys and she is...... *facepalm*), so I don't think she would like cats.
(From my brother, who loves dogs and hates cats)
Dessie Dog, I will join you! We will smite those cats.
- JoPup (He's not actually here, I'm (Addie) speaking for him...)

I like dogs better! Dogs are very smart, people train them to do all kinds of things. Have you ever seen a service cat that leads a blind person around? (if you have say so and I will possibly believe you, but i haven't so that is why I was asking) Also I like dogs better because you can actually play with them, like run and fetch and things like that. Also dogs can be useful for pulling a dog sled, or in my area, herding livestock (very useful). those are some pros about dogs.
My cats can open doors
My cats can open doors/cabnits, play fetch (unreliably), play with you, sit in your lap, ride on my shoulder, hunt vermin, and give you disdainful looks when I am being an idiot.
Team cat
cats are just as smart as dogs but way more indepentant dogs are cool but cats suit my needs better. becuase they don't need to be kept indoors, they don't need to be walked, and if you need to leave on vacation they can take care of themselves if you leave a little food and water out. plus they don't need constant attention!
Team Cat
I love cats!!!!!! (Horses too, and I also kinda like dogs, but don't tell Team Cat)
Team Dog!!!!
Gogogogogogogo!
Team Dog!!!!
Gogogogogogogo!!!!
I like both cats and dogs.
I like both cats and dogs. Though I think cats are more graceful. Dogs are cute (some of them, others are...*shudder*) and mostly friendly.
Does anyone here like the
Does anyone here like the Chihuahua? I do NOT! There was one time at an animal shelter and the chihuahua there was yapping in a surprisingly and annoyingly loud voice the entire time we were in the room. NOT my idea for the perfect pet.
@ ALAINA H
No, I hate them they are not cute whatever people say they are kinda creepy actually, and very very annoying
@all team cat won... btw i'm team cat too
@desarose that's a little bit weird and also cats r better
Team Cat!!!
My cat loves to play like hide and seek, she will hide around corners and then jump out and scare you, then if you hide around a corner she sill jump and surprise you she very very fluffy, and she loves to sleep at the end of my bed and she love sleeping my little sisters baby doll carriage and she loves the attention! Dogs are cute sometimes nada they are smart but cats are very smart to the ae very particular and very neat and not messy at all, were as dogs are very messy most of the times, they can be trained to do amazing thing but I don't know I'm just much more of a cat person than a dog person, plus cats can take care of them selves, and are over all nicer than dogs
