Today in Top Story: The U.S. Treasury Department asks law enforcement to investigate a tax record leak.

The Treasury Department has asked for law enforcement’s help. Tax records of some of America’s richest people somehow were leaked to a media group. The records show that those wealthy people paid little to no income taxes. The Internal Revenue Service is part of the Treasury Department. Its many tax records are considered confidential documents. How did the information get out?

Um yeah not good! They don't need to be leaking out private info! But yeah some of those people need to pay their fair share of taxes as well.

@ Riley D

Yeah

@ Riley

I completely agree

>:[

First of all, taxes are an ABOMINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taxation is theft
Second, I think it is perfectly fine that those people weren't letting the government rob them. There is nothing wrong with protecting your own property. If less wealthy people (Like me, unfortunately) are ok with the government stealing their hard-earned money, that's not the wealthy people's fault. Really, this is the government's fault for showing favoritism to wealthy people.

@Addie

Taxation is not theft as long as it is not overly high and unnecessary. Taxation money is what the government uses for lots of things. If you want good roads to drive on, that is part of your own taxes. If you have children that go to public schools and want there to be good schools, tax money goes to that. There are lots of things the government also does that is not good with tax money, but if there were absolutely no taxes, then where would we be? In a total disorderly state with everything running down.

@Riley D

Yes, those are all things that the government uses taxes for, but that doesn't mean that it's ok for them to take our money without our consent. If I steal from my sister to give my brother a birthday present that he absolutely deserves, does that make my theft righteous?
If we didn't have taxes, people would feel more responsibility to take care of roads and buildings. The only reason people don't voluntarily help with community services is because the government makes them do it. Think about it. If the people of America were in charge of where their own money went, then the most important things in America would get done. The people's best interest would happen because the people would be distributing the money where they wanted the money to go! We wouldn't have unnecessary wars or corrupted government spending our tax money on a private jet.
I don't blame you for your opinion, because we all have been taught to believe that America can't survive without taxes or the government. I agree that it would be hard to survive without any government, but taxes are the reason the government does anything for us.

PS

Also, the verse in the Bible where Jesus says 'Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's' is a good reminder that, first of all, everything belongs to God, so we have to do what is best for his things. Second of all, from a less spiritual view, every penny that my father makes by right belongs to him. Why should he have to give money to an entity that 1) He doesn't know, love, or even really agree with, 2) hasn't ever done anything for him personally, and 3) spends it on things that he doesn't want around, like abortion, government education, and Obamacare.

WOW

The government just got exposed
@Addie L: You are absolutely correct.

@Addie

That is true, but without taxes we couldn't have a very good government and without a government, well, America wouldn't be in good shape. Now, I do wish they would tax a little less, and also be careful on how they spend the money, and not keep spending so much more than they actually have, and then taxing us more to make up for it. That part is not fair. But I also think that is no one had to pay taxes, then things would not get done. I understand your thinking, but I think that is because we are both being brought up in godly households that teach us to do the right thing and to work hard to earn rewards. There are many people in this world that would want to just sit back and let others do the work and not pay anything. So I understand that you are against taxes, and I don't like heavy taxation, but I do think there needs to be some taxing for things to work out better.

P.S.

Also, that verse, you forgot to mention the whole part about giving to Caesar was what Caesars. You talked about giving to God, whic I think means tithing, and also commiting time to him, but Jesus was also telling the Jews that they were to still pay their taxes to Caesar. HE said it was ok to pay taxes. God doesn't really care a hoot about our money and how much we have. He cares about our hearts. So give your tax money to the government, but give your heart to God.

@riley

How would America be in bad shape? I think that if we had a government that didn't tax, they would be honest, hardworking men (and women, I suppose) who would make their money in different ways. Because what do we really need the government for? Criminal justice, yes, but the people in Ancient Rome and Greece got that done without a government (poorly, yes, but if the Constitution is in place, then we could do way better.). Ummmmm..... I can't really think of anything else that the government is necessary for.
The thing is, without a government, the people who didn't work wouldn't be able to provide for themselves. Without a government, the only way people would be able to live without working is if they lived in a poor house (funded by someone who worked for their living, had a surplus, and had a heart for people who don't work for themselves.)
My point is, the government encourages unemployment by paying people with tax dollars. If you take away the government paying people with tax, the honor system becomes more reliable. People have no choice but to work.
I don't think that that verse was saying to pay taxes. He said “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
This is not saying that the US dollar belongs to the government. A currency does not belong to someone. Everyone uses the currency. Therefore, since my father's money belongs to God, he gives part of his money to the church, and the rest he tries to use in a Godly manner. However, since the government would send him to jail if he didn't pay taxes, he is forced to pay them.
Of course, God doesn't care about how much money we have. But that's kind of irrelevant right now. Stealing is wrong and encouraging stealing is wrong too.
For a book reference that is REALLY GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can read Whatever Happened to Justice by Richard J Maybury. He is a very intelligent man and explains about the government and about the Founding Fathers. You should check it out. I highly recommend!

"'Tell us then, what is your

"'Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?' But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, 'You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.' They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, 'Whose image is this, and whose inscription?' 'Ceasar's,' they replied. Then he said to them, 'So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.' When they heard this they were amazed. So they left him and went away." Matthew 17-22, NIV
that is what the verse said, so yes they were refering to taxes. The government is here not only for criminals, but to make laws, and to take care of all the things that go on in this country and with other countries that the US has relations to. We wouldn't have things like the USDA without the government. The problem is, it is not hardworking, honest good men that get into government, and that is what makes it so corrupt. If you take a look in history then you will see that when there were actually hardworking honest men in government, such as Washington or Lincoln, the country was doing much better. It is when the government starts dumb things like Obamacare and Medicaid and Medicare and things like that, that it starts going downhill. It is when the government leaders are selfish and try to get what is best for them and not best for the country. If there was an honest leader, then he wouldn't over tax the people, and he would use the tax money he got wisely for the best of the people, not himself. The main problem is we get greedy people in our government that don't know what work is. Lincoln grew up in a poorish family and worked hard, so he naturally knew what the people had to do to earn their daily bread. But people like Biden have millions of dollars and have hardly ever worked in their life, like real down and dirty work. So they don't care about the middle and lower class of people who work to give everyone food and clothing. I mean, he might a little, but he is more concerned for himself. And that is all the time I have for now, let me know your thoughts on what I have said so far.

The dollar is the currency of

The dollar is the currency of the US, and the denarius was part of the Roman currency, right? But God doesn't own money, so no money is actually His. But He is the one that gives us the ability to work and do things pleasing to Him, so then we give and tithe some of the money to Him to use for other things to spread His word to more people. I mean, it is technically called giving back to God, but it is not like He gave it to us. He gave us the bodies and the talents to earn the money, and then he lets us earn money and then use some of it for doing His will. That is kinda how I see it right now.
I'll have to check out that book.

@Riley D

I appreciate your patience! The verse never says that Jesus said that taxes are ok. I know they were referring to taxes, but Jesus (typically XD) didn't answer them directly. I won't say anything about the USDA, because I don't know what all they do and if they are helpful or not, but I will say that farmers seemed to get on fine before the USDA. Also, how many laws that the government makes are actually necessary? I would bet WAY less than half.
The reason dishonest, corrupt men are in the government is 1) because the government has too much power and power corrupts and 2) dishonest, corrupt people are attracted to power. You are exactly right! Millionaires like Biden typically care more about themselves. Since they do, they don't mind taxing the American people. I'll stop now, we've both made our opinions clear. You should really check out that book! I had a very similar outlook as you before I read that book, and it changed my worldview dramatically!

It posted it twice. |:[

@ Riley

Technically God owns ALL the money... And we are supposed to give back (no that's not right) ummm...that concept is tricky to explain. anyway God owns all the money because everything we "own" is HIS.

Libertarians

They think leftist economic ideas are too utopian and radical, then they unironically advocate for no taxes and no government. lol

@Zack

I think you're talking about anarchists. I am a libertarian, and I don't think that a country with no government would work well at all. No taxes would be fine if everyone tried, but since that's not going to happen, I'm just going to go for less taxes.

@Addie

Hmm... I don't know. I did Government this year in school and some of the things they talked about seemed pretty useful. The curriculum is Exploring Government by Ray Notgrass, if you are interested. I highly suggest it it is from a Christian point of view! And I guess I will end this debate if you want to because I think we have both stated our points well and it was a good debate. Nothing really changed about my views or yours, but at least we got exposed to something different, right? And that is a big point of debate. Sorry I am not very good at debating!

@Riley D

I hope someday I'll be able to explain my opinions more clearly with more proof to back it up. Until then, we'll both learn more about government and we'll see if we change our opinions! Thanks for the debate!
