Calls for Cease-Fire
News Bytes 05/18/2021 48 Comments

After a week of rocket barrages and airstrikes, the U.N. Security Council and Muslim nations are demanding a stop to civilian bloodshed in the Middle East. U.S. President Joe Biden, however, is giving no signs of pressuring Israel to agree to a cease-fire—despite calls for the administration to get more involved.

The conflict broke out last Monday. Terrorist Palestinian militant group Hamas fired long-range rockets at Jerusalem after weeks of clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police. Fighting focused on the intense policing during the Muslim celebration of Ramadan and the threatened eviction of dozens of Palestinian families by Jewish settlers.

Residents of Gaza described yesterday’s barrage as the heaviest since the war began. Fighting was even more powerful than airstrikes the day before that left 42 dead and flattened three buildings.

That brings the toll since Hamas and Israel began fighting last Monday to at least 188 killed in Gaza and eight in Israel. Some 55 children in Gaza and a five-year-old boy in Israel are among the dead.

This recent outbreak is the fourth such war between Israel and Hamas. In yesterday’s attack, the Israeli military says it destroyed nine miles of militant tunnels and the homes of nine Hamas commanders. The attack killed a local leader of the Islamic Jihad militant group, according to the Israeli military. Officials blamed him for some 3,100 rocket attacks launched at Israel.

A three-story building in Gaza City was heavily damaged. But residents say the military warned them 10 minutes before the strike, and everyone cleared out.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, says the United States is “working tirelessly through diplomatic channels” to stop the fighting.

Multiples countries have appealed to Hamas leaders and the nation of Israel for an end to fighting. But the two have shown no sign of progress.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is working to broker a cease-fire, saying that all parties “should de-escalate tensions and bring a halt to the violence.”

Representative Adam Schiff and Senator Bernie Sanders called on President Biden to pressure both sides. “I think the administration needs to push harder on Israel and the Palestinian Authority to stop the violence, bring about a cease-fire, end these hostilities, and get back to a process of trying to resolve this long-standing conflict,” Schiff says.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israelis that Israel “wants to levy a heavy price” on Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers. That will “take time,” Netanyahu says, a signal the war would rage on for now.

Representatives of Muslim nations have met to demand Israel halt attacks that are killing Palestinian civilians in the crowded Gaza strip.

Biden administration officials are urging calm. But they’re not speaking publicly about prodding Israel to go along with a push for a cease-fire. Instead, the administration seems determined to take U.S. foreign policy focus off the Middle East.

However, the Israel-Palestinian problem won’t go away, says Tamara Cofman Wittes, a former deputy assistant secretary of state for the Middle East in the Obama administration.

The current fighting “reveals how deeply unstable is the ‘status quo’ between Israelis and Palestinians,” she says, “and how urgently a new political path is needed to move this conflict toward negotiated resolution.”

In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. — John 16:33

UPDATE: After receiving heavy international pressure, Israel agreed on Thursday, May 20, to end its 11-day retaliation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. After initially refusing to condemn Israel's response to the Hamas attacks, U.S. President Joe Biden called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the ongoing airstrikes. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi worked to broker a diplomatic solution between the nation of Israel and the militant Hamas.

Yes I think they need to stop firing.

This sort of sounds like the Hunger Games, were the capitol sends down airstrikes on District 12.

, yeah! It does! Though, that doesn't seem like a good thing... in Hunger games it is fun to read because it is fake, but this isn't..

@ Caroline and Noah

I agree

6th comment

I think they should cease fire. It seems quite stupid to keep fighting over the Gaza Strip as well. Did you know Israel has the best military in the world? My mom told me everyone has to serve (men and women) for at least two years, and they have a really good training program. @ above Rats I'm not allowed to read the Hunger Games though several friends have recommended them. Are they any good?

Does anybody remember the

Does anybody remember the good ole' days when covid didn't exist? I'm not sure I do anymore... (sniffles) XPXPXPPXPXPXPXPXPXP

this is mylee

@Micah D yes isreal has a very good military I take Krav Maga so I know from experience. I want them to cease fire bc I hate wars. I rly don't understand whyy the Biden administration dosn't want them to cease and why they are messing with another countrys buisness ??

9th Comment

Yeah I do think that Israel needs to stop firing, cause this war is stupid. I hate the fact that all those countries over there just start a war when ever they have a chance or the slightest excuse, or no excuse at all, they just all hate each other

This is London

I rly hope they stop fighting. I do Krav Maga which is Israel martial arts.(I also do taekwondo) I really enjoy it

I really want them to cease fire!
@ London so do I! And I really enjoy it. I also do fencing, which I think is pretty fun to do too

@Micah, I enjoy the Hunger Games, but I also understand why you aren't aloud to read it. It is very violent, and in the movies they swear quite a lot... I like it for the plot though, and I think it is good writing. @Everyone, don't give me spoilers for the very last movie! I haven't seen it yet (though I have read the book)! @Abigal, cool! My brother and dad are learning fencing!

@London, cool! My older brother and sister took taekwondo, and my sister earned a black belt, though they never gave it to her because we moved very soon afterwords!

I think fencing would be fun to do!
@Caroline: Yeah I don't think my parents would let me watch or read something like that!!! I don't even know if I would want to. I can understand why Micah's parents won't, if they know what it is about.

Oh that is interesting about the Israel military. Um, I still remember them a little! XDXDXD That is probably what the government is trying to do make everyone forget so that they can't protest to get back to normal and the government stays in control of everyone.

Revelation 22:20 "He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming quickly."

Micah D: yes, in school this year I learned about Israel and it's military. Oh yes, those good ol' days...:) XDXDXD
David P: thanks for the verse.
The Article: I think in general, fighting and wars are bad. Killing innocent people and children is terrible! However, I don't know if I like it that other countries can just force other countries to stop fighting. Like this year in America, have you liked being forced to do things because of COVID-19? So...I hope the fighting stops, but I don't know if OTHER countries should just command different nations to stop fighting, or "cease fire".

Hmmm....End times?

Doesn't the Bible say something about Israel will be attacked by its enemies in Revelation?? There has been a lot of assaulting on them recently. I may be wrong....can anyone fact check me?

Well, if the Bible says that (which I think it does), we shouldn't take it too literally, since it's a prophecy and those don't usually speak plainly. Israel could mean the chosen people of God, (us) the Jews, or something else.
I think we need to remember that bad things have been happening for thousands of years, and people throughout that entire time have been expecting the end times, so it's not very likely in my opinion (which happens to be very unimportant) that the end times will be soon.
Something that my pastor reminded us of on Sunday was the First and Second Great Awakenings. Right before one of them, in the 1740s, a pastor was lamenting how no one was religious and most people were scorning God. We can have hope that another Great Awakening will happen soon!

Yeppers. Our good fraud Joe

Yeppers. Our good fraud Joe isn't helping the Israelis out. Pssh. Nooo surprise.

@Addie L

You have a good point. I am aware that it probably isn't a sign of the end times FOR THE TIME BEING, however, the Bible DOES warn of it coming when no one expects. But you are right, a revival is coming and I don't think it is the END. I was just double checking. Thanks for the info. However, I do have a silly fear of the end times, WHAT IF THEY RAPTURE HAPPENS WHILE I AM IN THE SHOWER???!! I know it won't matter, but it would be pretty funny as well as awkward. XD

HEY! John 16:33 is my favorite Bible verse.

@Grace, yeah that would be funny! But I'm also guessing no one is going to care in Heaven... I mean, that is how God created us at first...

I think in Revelation it does say that in the end, all the countries wil turn away from Israel, and Israel will be left to fight alone. With the U.S. pulling away we were Israel's big aid, I feel that is kinda a sign.

This is London

Grace D I think the same things XD tho more of it is I haven’t told anoth ppl about God.

I THINK ABOUT THAT ALL THE TIME!!!! It would be SO awkward!!! Do you think we would have time to put our clothes on, or do you think we really wouldn't care? EEEKKKKK I really hope I am fully clothed.....

this is mylee

@Abigail do you do TKD or KM ? That's cool fencing looks kinda scary XD. I mean ya'll use fake swords unless it's a competition right ?

@Addie L

I think Israel (the nation) is what they're talking about, not us.

@ Grace and Addie

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!!!!!!! I have that fear too! Like, AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! But as Addie said, would we care?

@Riley D

Yes, I think it also says that the anti christ will proclaim himself God, and also that the blood at one of the battles near Jerusalem (sorry) will rise 6 feet high.

@David P

XD. Yeah, that ain't no battle; not in my book anyway. Other than the gore flying everywhere, that's pretty boring, as far as fights go. What kind of fight against God is a fight at all? That's just a no brainer. You lose every time. So like I said. Boring. Not a battle. Blood bath. Lol.

@David: Yes, that is why we always have to have our guard set.
@Addie, Grace, and Bethy: haha I had never thought of that. But God is not going to care, and when we get to Heaven we are going to be clothed in God's clothing, probably white robes, so it won't matter what we are in or are not in.

@ Riley

Oh yeah, I don't care about it once I'm in heaven, I just mean before that--while I'm still a pathetic human who wants her clothes.

We will most certainly not

We will most certainly not care xDD

Yeah, we know God isn't gonna care, but it is still funny to think about... XD
Like, what if you are clipping your toenails and only finish one foot before the other!! YOU WILL HAVE ONE TRIMMED FEET/TOE AND ONE THAT IS UNCLIPPED! ew!

Oooooh XP

Imagine if it happened in the middle of a haircut!!!! Like, you were getting your long hair cut reallllllly short, and the hairdresser was halfway done, and then BOOM. Judgment Day. And half of your hair is on the floor of the barbershop! XD

xD We're getting glorified

xD We're getting glorified bodies so.....xD

@ Addie

Oh...aahhh! Yikes! I never thought of that before! Or what if you were braiding your hair into two parts, but only was able to finish one braid! Or only paint on hand of fingernails and didn't have time to dry it !

What if someone was getting a spray tan and they got halfway done!!! At Level 10!!!
Or if someone was only partway finished cleaning the clown makeup off of their face!
Or if someone was in the middle of getting their braces off!

Omg! These are amazing (above)

Or you are halfway through a nerve-racking movie?
Or only brushed half of your hair?

@Addie L, N&M A, Grace D, Bethy S

Um, read Left Behind. That'll give you perspective on this conversation.

@Hesperus, yeah, but you know, I only read the first one, because it was SO weird to me! I guess it is because they take all the prophiesies in Revelation litarlly, and I think some of it was poetic license... :) It was just weird to me! Weird fact about the Left Behinds: used bookstores won't take the Left Behinds as donations because there are so many of them, and most people don't want them! So if they let people donate them they would have WAY to many of them! No offense Hesperus, they just felt weird to me.. You can totally like them!

@Caroline N

No offense taken. I didn't care for them a whole lot myself. They got so boring.

Oh man.... The soapy one.... You would be so itchy up to the time when you don't really care anymore. And I wonder if you would ever wonder what the end of the movie was?? One of the reasons that I can't wait for heaven is that I either will be able to learn all kinds of stuff, or that I won't care. (There's just not enough time in your life to learn!!)

Lol, ikr Addie L! The real question is whether or not we will care! There just isn't even enough time to THINK of all the Questions we will have when we get to heaven! Thankfully, God is very patient! XD :)
Hesperus D: I have seen the movie. now i know the movies are always pretty different from the books, but yeah...

@ Grace & Addie

I have never heard of that book\movie I think...anyway, yes! That would be so bad! Or if you just used shampoo but didn't have time to use conditioner! My hair would be so dry and snarly! :)
(I'm leaving for a long trip to TN, so I'll be gone for over week, but have fun coming up with more ideas! XD:)

Have fun!

I think it will be fun just to meet all the people! and the fun of knowing who you get to see, like my grandparents, and my friend who died in a car accident! But then I wonder if when we get there, we will find out who of our family doesn't get to come to Heaven. Like, what if I have thought all along that my cousin is coming to heaven, but then when I get there i find out that he is doomed to hell. Will I be sad? Because there are no tears in heaven or sadness. Will I even know? Or will it be like I just forgot he even lived and I will just live happily with the rest of my family that did make it to heaven? That part confuses me. What are y'alls thoughts?

@Riley D

I think their will be sorrow for those who were doomed to hell, but I don't think it will be eternal.
