Joe Biden has officially become the 46th president of the United States of America.

President Biden took the oath of office just before noon on January 20, 2021, during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the presidential oath.

President Biden called for unity in his inaugural address. “We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect, we can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature,” he says, “for without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.”

He repeated, as he had throughout his campaign: “I will be a president for all Americans. I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as those who did.”

Kamala Harris was also sworn in as the nation’s first female vice president.

The former U.S. senator is now the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in the U.S. government.
