Percibald Garcia isn’t an actor or voiceover artist. He’s not a teacher or childcare worker. But since May, the 27-year-old architect has been a popular storyteller among some kids in quarantine.
During the pandemic, weeks of confinement—no friends, no group activities—have been dull and dreary, especially for children.
“Almost nobody was looking after the way that kids were experiencing this lockdown,” Garcia says.
For months now, Garcia has taken his “wandering microphone” into the green spaces between buildings in an enormous Mexico City apartment complex. There he broadcasts stories while children listen.
During His time on Earth, Jesus told stories. He often spoke in parables because He knows that stories can reveal truth, overcome barriers, gather people together—and even change them.
Garcia reads stories like El Tlacuache Lunatico (The Crazy Opossum) by David Martín del Campo. He often plays songs by Mexican children’s composer Francisco Gabilondo Soler. Children pop up at the windows of the multistory buildings for the show. A few venture out with parents to sit on the grass or a bench.
“The public plaza has been extremely important in Mexico since the time of our ancestors,” Garcia notes. “It is where people meet, talk, where the life of a neighborhood develops.” The pandemic hit this aspect of life hard, because people have been encouraged not to go out or gather. He calls his reading project “De la Casa a la Plaza” (“From the house to the plaza”).
Garcia believes his readings help to reclaim those shared spaces—and stem the movement to a digital world. “In the last three months, everything has gone online—work, contacts, shopping,” he says. “This is an act of resistance in the face of this ferocious digitalization.”
Rogelio Morales listens from his grandmother’s window. Since March, the nine-year-old has spent much of his time playing video games. “The only thing I go out for is to walk my dog,” he says. “It’s a little boring.”
But of the storytelling, Rogelio says, “It’s nice. We can relax a little.”
Luna Gonzalez came outside with her mother. They listened to Garcia from a safe distance, both wearing face masks. “I imagine what the animals are like,” says Luna. “I get bored at home.”
Rogelio’s grandmother, Maria Elena Sevilla, also sits at the window. “It is not just children he is entertaining,” she says. “It is people of my age too.”
These days, most of his neighbors have cellphones, tablets, or computers. But Garcia wants them to hear the human voice—and thrill in the world of shared tales.
@Riley
I really hope that what my friend said wasn't offensive....that's just the way she talks:)
@Dessie & Lori
Oh no it was not offensive at all it was very helpful!!! You yeah we have plenty of space to run and I like talking walks and stuff. How big do huskies get? And when you say that they get separation anxious, what does that mean? Like for how long before they start getting anxious and then what do they do when they get anxious? Will they try to run away? Because we have had a dog run away before, and in July we leave for like two weeks and someone comes out to take care of our stuff but only like twice a day. We have another dog will that be a problem at all? Like will the husky get less anxious if it has a friend? Are they pretty friendly? Like if i get it used to people when it is little, when it meets new people will it get super excited and try to jump on them (because I don't want to scare anyone) or like do they have pretty friendly personalities or more cautious? Sorry about all the questions because I don't even know if I will get a husky yet but I sure would like to know more!! Thanks guys!!!
@Dessie
Oh yeah another question. We have a lot of other animals, such as cattle, horses, and chickens. Would a husky be likely to try to chase them a lot? Or want to catch them almost like they are hunting it?
@ Bethy
I feel like the good twin's name should be something like Marigold or Margret or something with a M and the 'bad' twin's name should start with a N. I feel like the neutral people should be a husband and wife and their daughter/son? (Maybe son so there can be some romance?) I'm still thinking on a good bad guy name and you know how I am with titles! (But I'll keep thinking!) (Plz don't feel like you HAVE to do any of this)
this is Wyn /@ Bethy
no i have not read that series but they do sound fun. yes, they do get home and tell their family about their discoverys
@ Belwyn & Dessie (& Riley) [& Lissa] {& Wyn} |& Nadia|
Thank you so much for your ideas!
Desarose: (Great subject line!) Yeah, one of the points was that the bad twin doesn't think there's anything above magic. but there actually is. And yes, it is supposed to be quite tragic. One thing I didn't share before was that the good twin dies saving the bad twin. Thank you for the idea! (Song: The one I listened to was a female, but with a very accented voice too!)
Belwyn: Very interesting idea with those names, I like it. Yes, the neutral people are married I think, but they may be part of a group. I'm not sure what you meant by the son\daughter part, could you explain? But I'm all for romance!
Riley: I haven't heard of those people, but I'll see if I can look them up!
Lissa: Ah, okay. I thought that's what you might mean! Thanks for explaining!
Wyn: Alright, so they get chased away and then return? :) BTW, I think your story sounds really fun. What is the secret to 'Cloverson's Secret'? (I hope I spelled that right!)
Nadia: The Bible Bee sounds really fun, and I would love to go! But...it's far away and my family is super busy with speech & debate and stuff in general.
Everybody A Random-ish Question
(I need to get better at writing subject lines!)
(If you don't want to answer, that fine!)
Question: What is the meanest thing you've ever done against one of your characters? (Any story, any time.)
Bonus Question: What's the meanest thing one of your characters has done to you?
@ Bethy
I meant the lady and guy have a son who marries the 'bad' one (I guess, cuz the other one DIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [so sad :( sniff])
@ Bethy / this is wyn
Yes they do get chased but they stay in Cloverson for most of the book and at the end the make the trip home.
about above/ @ Bethy / this is wyn
they figure out some interesting family background information.
STOP! FREEZE! READ THIS COMMENT!
@Lissa
Do you have a title idea yet? (Or did you already say it and I forgot?) :)
@Bethy
(Thanks XD I’m just having fun bc subject lines get super annoying:) ) I really like your idea and hope it turns out really good! Hmmm….Badguy names. Treblig, Sirrom, Orion, Idk. You could try spelling names backward if you want (That’s what I did, Gilbert, Morris…I didn’t with Orion though:) ) and see what it turns out. Is the evil person a guy or a girl?
@Riley
We are working on answering your questions, Lori is just a little busy right now:) She is super exited and really hopes you get one:) We both don't mind about all the questions either....actually they are a lot of fun to answer!
@Belwyn
Meanest thing? I'll give you a list...and you can decide!
Drowning in ink
Being killed by a best friend who forgot everything (John and Jackson)
Waking up one morning and the whole family is dead
Tormented mentally for a week, then was killed
Slowly frozen
Starved to death
Best friend killed before main character's eyes
The main character (me, or Maple Turner) thought her most loyal friend was a traitor. Upon her friend's death, she found out that her friend had saved her life (So mean to myself too!) At the end of the book, I died, so yeah.
Meanest things a character did to me? There are two different questions here...but I cant answer them yet I have to go:)
a blah blah bleety blu blah
@Riley
This is Lori and huskies can get pretty big but they also get about average size and they will be fine for a while then they start to mess separation anxiety is just the dog freaking out that its not near or cant see you so they chew or pee or howl a lot but if there’s another dog it’ll be alright and they’ll do fine if there’s people it just matters what’s going on but they can be really cautious sometimes other than that there okay and if you socialize them with the dog they’ll be fine and sometimes it depends on what gender the dog is and what gender you get if you get one.
This is Dessie it depends on how you train it you have to work with it because they are very stubborn and close to wolves sometimes you have to be firm with it and very consistent sometimes they can be very independent or big babies they are unpredictable and it depends on the dog if its skittish or out going sorry that we didn’t edit it was a bother we are doing school and there is to many interruptions to fix it this time.
@ Belwyn
Ohhh...yes, good idea! Thanks a lot!!!
@ Desarose (& all)
Ikr, subject lines are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying!
The bad person is a man, and thanks for the ideas!
But, I was the one who asked the question about characters, not Belwyn.
Everyone: My answer would probably be: This girl dies if she sees light and then does it to save the world, but it's the middle of a war and she has never seen anything else so she thinks she losing her life for some really lame world. Anyway, she saves the day, but starts fading away. Then the guy she likes is all sad that she's dying, and she finally tells him that she liked him, and he's in the middle of telling her when OOOH! the warning from the becomes true and he loses all his memories! Girl doesn't understand, so her life goes from bliss to horror, but doesn't want to hurt him, so she tells him not to worry, and then she dies! And all the other characters are sad, but the guy isn't, and it's so sssssaaaaadddddddd!!!! And then the book ends (and the readers want to attack the author).
@ Wyn
Oh cool! :)
Twin Story
Do you think I should write it from third person, or switching back and forth in first person? Or have it be third person good twin, and then third person bad twin after good twin dies? If I had it in first person switching off, then the reader would guess that they are twins, which the reader isn't supposed to think, especially since good twin thinks she already has a twin.
This is Mylee
I would like a twin story XD.
@Riley
About your other question, Lori said to be careful because it will try to hunt them down if you don't work with it. You have to introduce it to all the animals as a puppy, AND WATCH OUT for your chickens and stuff, make SURE to introduce it to the chickens, and show it that chasing them is not acceptable from an early age.

@Bethy
Woops! Sorry about that mistake!
Meanest thing a character did to me...
When I was my own self in a story....
The bad lady let me watch my own dogs starve to death:(
When I was the author (note, this is hard to answer so I'll do my best)
The main character was so WIMPY so I quit on the story. (even though...that was my fault)
@Riley
Were my earlier comments offensive? I hope not...
@Belwyn
How far are you on the story about Running Deer?
@All here is the first part of Chapter 4...I'm sorry I know it is VERY difficult to follow. Can you tell me how we (me and Lori) can fix it up?
Jackson was mad. He had invited Rosette to go look around at Devonshire with him and Rosette accepted. They were trotting along smoothly when suddenly, Jackson heard a swishing noise and a twang, and saw the coachman fall dead with a black feathered arrow in his side. At that moment a clashing erupted from somewhere nearby and the startled horses went crazy. Jackson couldn’t stop the frenzied beasts as they were galloping towards a deep, fast flowing river.
John saw the bandit crouching in the bushes and tried in vain to call out but it was too late. The bandit turned and saw John and fled but not before John had got a glance at his face. But John couldn’t chase after the varmint before he tried to stop the frightened horses. He leapt forward and seized the horse’s bridle before they reached the river’s edge and just managed to turn them. Rosette was as pale as a white sheet at her near death experience. “Horses running away again?” Asked a breathless John with a grin. Jackson was red all over for needing John’s help but Rosette was smiling. “Oh!” she exclaimed happily. “I thought we were finished!” “My pleasure, Madam.” John bowed and winked at Jackson which only made Jackson more mad. “You can go now.” He said. Rosette shot an astonished glance at Jackson. “Why, Jackson! That’s more than a rude way to address the person who saved our lives!” “well, thank you.” Said Jackson grudgingly. “I was glad to be helpful to such a beautiful lady as Duchess Rosette.” John smiled. “Shall I lead your coach back to the castle seeing that you are in need of a coachman?” Before Jackson could deny the offer Duchess Rosette said “Yes, thank you John.” As they were going along Rosette chattered unceasingly to John while Jackson sat sullenly with a bright pink face. 'Hmph that John getting in the middle of me and lady Rosette, why! Was he in the area.' Jackson looked at John a little suspiciously. Could he have been the one who killed the coachman? He smirked and thought in spite of himself 'I hope so then I could have revenge.'

I'm not VERY mean to my characters.....for the sake of my younger brothers I can't be THAT mean but....maybe the meanest thing is I killed the kids parents (but they're not really dead) and made him get mistreated/beaten/almost killed/thrown to lions/break leg....
the meanest thing they've done to me was when I was younger they enslaved me :((
@ Desarose & Lori
I'll say more later but:
1. " to go look around at Devonshire" seems like a rather weak phrase.
2. "suddenly, Jackson heard" don't think there should be a comma.
Dessie: Oh, the does sound mean!
.
Mylee: :) Glad you would like it!
Nadia: Harsh, but understandable. WDYM by "enslaved"? For me, my characters insisted on being mopey and lame and depressed, and argued with me! And I made her! The indignity! But I told her that if she wanted to be miserable, then she should go ahead and see how well it works!
@Dessie & Lori
No your comments are not offensive at all they are really helpful!!!! So which breed would you recommend to be the least hairy and the friendliest? And then I would basically need to work really hard with it as a puppy to teach it not to chase things or jump on people or do things like that, correct? (I guess you would have to do that with other dogs as well, but I wasn't sure if it would be more interested in animals because it is close to a wolf.) I would probably prefer to get a female, because our other dog is a female and I don't want to have to do any surgery to a male to keep it from breeding because that can get expensive...
@ Dessie S.
Weellllllllllll............... Not to far b/c I was working on finishing reading the readers for this year's history, but I finished them all last night, so now I can devote most of my free time to writing! (yah!)
@ Dessie S. and Riley D. (and Lori)
Wow, Riley! It's cool you are thinking about getting a husband! I think they are SO cute and would get one! (If my mom would let us, but she is NOT fond of pets AT ALL!)
@ Dessie S. and Riley D. (and Lori)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SORRY FOR THAT TYPO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Husky, not husband!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD (tho it was kinda hilarious, so sorry if it was offensive!)
@ Belwyn
(Sorry if I already asked this.) Do you have a plan of when your book will be done?
@ Belwyn
Oh my goodness that is HILARIOUS (sorry, I'm not helpinggg) I'm literally laughing *laughing crying emoji* XDDD typos can change a sentence so much xDDDDDD
@Above
@Belwyn: Yes it is cool!! Uh yeah but I am not quite old enough to be thinking of a husband yet!! XDXDXDXD No offense at all I understand about typos!! It is funny!
@Dessie: would you and Lori recommend a female or male? Husky that is?
@ Riley D.
Yeah, me neither! XD
@ Belwyn
I think it's especially funny how the typo changes the whole sentence!! XD XP XD XP :) :) :) :) :D :P
@ N&M. A
I know, HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD
@ Everyone: You know, I never realized how much XD really does look like a laughing face.
@ Bethy
I know, right! Yeah, I want to get it published through Amazon for my cousin's birthday in May.

So, I went back to where I started commenting: 300 comments, page 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We've come so far, ya'll!!!!!!!!!!!!
RUN!!! Dessie is commenting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Bethy thanks! We will change those up a bit!
@All (This is super random, just an interesting question i want to ask...don't feel like you have to answer!) Did anyone read Keeper of the Lost Cities or Rangers Apprentice?
@Riley (Note, this is some grave news....)
It's a good idea not to get a male for the surgery and all that....but if you get a female.....um.....ok. I guess I will have to be the bearer of bad news here! Female huskies, if not raised properly, will tear another female to pieces. (This is from experience, one of my females broke the other female's neck in a fight...nearly killed her...blinded her in one eye...) BUT DON'T BE AFRAID OF THAT TO THE POINT THAT YOU DON'T GET A HUSKY!!!! They can be trained out of that and be best friends instead of mortal enemies. The way you make sure everything will be ok is you get her (the husky) as a puppy, not an adult. If she is a puppy, then your other dog will show the pup that it cannot be bigger than her. If this pecking order is settled early, you'll be fine. If not, you will have to always watch them and always settle squabbles and stuff. If you leave and they fight, the husky will probably not show mercy. But again...YOU CAN WORK WITH THEM. Huskies are actually very friendly to other dogs once the pecking order is established. You will do just fine if you get a young puppy and let it know your other dog all its life. (Do you plan on letting them run loose? If so, than I wouldn't worry about it.) But...I for one, if I had the money to let the veterinarian to its work, would get a male husky and have a vet do surgery on it so it won't make babies. That's what I'd do, but if a female works better, then don't worry too much about fights. The only reason I told you was so that you could just have it in the back of your head, to make sure that you get them used to each other when your puppy is young. If so, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. (But, to be on the safe side, feed them separately ...huskies are overprotective of their food). Sorry if that was a little um...hard to deal with. I for one think you will be just fine.

@ Desarose's Random Book Question
I actually am on a Keeper of the Lost Cities spree! I just had to tear myself away from Unlocked to go and do school! I am really liking Keeper of the Lost Cities and read Flashback in three days! (It was supposed to be two, but I was busy with other things...) Last Tuesday I read Nightfall, then on Thursday I started Flashback, and then on Sunday I started Legacy, and on Tuesday (yesterday) I started Unlocked! (I think that's right.)(The Library was annoying bc I had all the books except Nightfall in, and I had to wait for it!!)
I haven't read The Ranger's Apprentice, but my brother is reading it.
Why did you want to know?
(If we both like these books, we must really be similar...:)
P.S I had a dream about you and your friend helping us out, it had to do with dogs I think! (You were both very nice.)
@Dessie
No I have not read those books.
Oh boy I didn't know they would do that. I figured the males would be more aggressive because, well, they are males. I will definitely consider it. I found some online in a town about 4 hrs away from here and the males are cheaper, so maybe it would be better to go that option. I would be getting it as a puppy, as young as I can, but still, to be on the safe side... And about feeding them separate, our dog that we have is very protective about her food too!! When we had our other dog we would have to feed them separate because Sage (the one we still have) would chase the other dog away and eat both of the foods!! So I will see what Lori says too (although you two think alike. No wonder you are friends! ;) ) but you would recommend getting a male and getting it fixed, correct? And yeah we let our dogs run loose we have quite a bit of land. Thanks again and info you can give is great!!! And once more, I think it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL that y'all drive a dog team!!! That is so neat to me!!!
@Dessie
No, I haven’t read those series, but Keeper of the lost cities has been on my list to read for a while and a friend of mine told me about rangers apprentice years ago and just haven’t gotten around to it... Have you read them? Are they good?
@above
The last question is for Bethy too
@Desarose
Hhm... I think I was thinking UNSHACKLED as the title... Because Vergan can't escape the fact he's tied to what the pirates expect of him, and Melaynia can't evade the fact she ran from oppresion on a farm to be enslaved once again. Oh, also about a month after Vergan escapes with Melaynia, his half brother Manuel follows with his three slaves, one of who is Melaynia's friend from the farm she ran from.

@Lissa Y
Sorry I don't remember if I have said anything on your story or not I have been so busy I have only really been reading the comments related directly to me. But I think your story will be very good. I personally don't prefer to read stories that have anything to do with the 'r' word, uh, forced to have a baby, and running off and getting married and having babies, but I know lots of people do and I think it will be a really good book. I also like 'Unshackled' as a title!
@ Lissa
I think the title is great!
@ Amelia
I like them a lot now, but I had to get used to them first. I mean...like...they're different than the books I had been reading. Sorry, that wasn't very helpful. There's more teen-romance-drama (in the later books) than what I had been reading, and sometimes the adults act a little weird, and a few of the morals are slightly iffy, but in general, they're great! Read them! I like them a lot! They are quite suspenseful and well-written.
Dogs, books, and other what not.
@Riley
I’d recommend an Alaskan husky and a female if you do introduced them when they are young and there are ways you can train them to be able to eat in a room together also it’ll do good if you train it and sorry if what I say is hard to understand I always prefer to talk in person but other than that I think it’ll be fine if you get a female.
Oh and the way you train them to eat together is get like a baby fence so they know that there both in the same room and get to the point where both there bowls are touching the fence and they’re able to eat that close to each other but you don’t have to do this you can find other ways to train them. That’s all I wanted to add to what Dessie said.
-Lori
This is Dessie
Yeah, just work with it! All dogs in general require a lot of work, but if you work with your puppy you will have a lifelong friend! It will be worth it, I assure you!
You're dog Sage sounds silly:) Our dogs do the same. XD it is very silly.
-Dessie
PS let us know if you get one! We both are praying you will make the right choice in getting a new dog. If you have more questions let us know! We are happy to be helpful!
About books.....
So, I only was able to read the first book of The Keeper of the Lost Cities, and I liked it a whole lot! But...sadly....we left Anc. before I could finish the sieries. When we went to a library there I saw all the series of Ranger's apprentice....and accidently grabbed the ELEVENTH BOOK. I found out when we got home I was like OH NO!!! (i read it anyway...) But yeah, those are amazingly good books I like them so much...
@Lissa
Hey that sounds like a great title! Have you started the book yet, or do you just have the idea in your head?
@All (sorry, I'm very curious on this subject, and sort of doing a survey or whatever) Do you write in your head? Or when a story is playing out in your head is it more like a movie? If it's more like a book, can you actually store it in your head with the word choice and everything? And if it's a movie, is there music playing in your mind as well? (random, sorry about that:) )
Dogs, books, and other what not.

But yeah, those are amazingly good books I like them so much...
@Lissa
(random, sorry about that:) )
@Bethy
The reason why I wanted to ask was this: I was wondering if the other books in those series get a little....naughty. That's all.
(I'm really wondering why we seem so similar! Maybe we are distant cousins or something... XD)
Glad we were nice in your dream XD Yeah we probably would try to help if there was something to do with those tail chasing rascals! We are so dog crazy. Well, she has about 16 doggies and I have 8...
A Random thing, while we r on the topic of dreams
So, in this movie i like, there's this evil sorceress who tries to take over the city. In my DREAM LAST NIGHT, I WAS THE EVIL LADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I woke up I thought 'Good grief, Des, what on earth?!' Literally. I. Was. The. Badguy. I was so mortified with myself ('Dessie, how could you do that? Naughty, Naughty you!') Strange, huh? (Don't judge me, I can't control myself in dreams!) XD XD
