The Polio Paradox
News Bytes 12/9/2019 101 Comments

Nigeria, Congo, Central African Republic, and Angola report nine new cases of polio linked to the oral polio vaccine. Seven other African countries, Asia, and Pakistan report similar outbreaks. Today, more children are paralyzed by the live oral vaccine than from polio caught in the wild.

Polio is a highly infectious disease that spreads through contaminated water or food. Symptoms are severe and can cause paralysis. There isn’t a cure for polio, but it can be prevented by immunization.

Vaccines are fascinating tools that combat dangerous diseases. By introducing certain trace amounts of some viruses and bacteria into the human body, the body’s immune system learns to recognize those harmful entities and attack them aggressively. This offers future disease protection.

There are two types of polio vaccine. The oral vaccine is cheap and easy to administer. It’s most often used in lesser developed countries. But because it’s a live vaccine, it carries more risk than the injectable vaccine. In some cases, the live virus changes inside the recipient’s body. It becomes too strong for the body’s immune system to fight off. In those cases, the person who received the vaccine gets sick with polio. That cannot happen with the injectable vaccine. It uses a killed sample of the virus. This vaccine is more costly, but much safer. It is not capable of causing polio.

Vaccine-linked cases of polio are rare, but they do exist. The latest vaccine-derived polio cases came from a Type 2 virus in the vaccine. Interesting note — the Type 2 wild virus was eradicated years ago.

The World Health Organization wants all vaccine-derived outbreaks stopped within 120 days of detection. The latest cases are concerning and call for concerted action.

Higher cost keeps the better vaccination from getting to the hundreds of thousands of children who need it. With limited resources, sometimes corners are cut. The oral polio vaccine is a low-cost defense against a horrendous disease. But should cost jeopardize safety? Could lesser developed countries have better access to the inactive, injectable immunization?

Every single life is immeasurably valuable in God’s sight. Christ gave His own life for our eternally perfect spiritual and physical health. We have hope that one day there won’t be a need for protection against disease because there will be no more sickness. Period.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away  — Revelation 21:4

I had no idea that there was

I had no idea that there was an oral vaccine. It sounds awfully risky, though. I wish that the injectable vaccine wasn't so expensive. Then more lives would be saved instead of put in jeopardy.

This doesn't sound very safe.

Are they still using the oral vaccine??? It said up at the top that more kids are paralyzed from the oral vaccine than Polio caught in the wild. Maybe they would be better off without the oral vaccine, at least until this stops.

I hope they find a cheaper

I hope they find a cheaper way to make the injectable vaccine!!

Oral Vaccine?

Dose that mean you drink it? I think if people are getting sick they should ban this And make the other one cheaper. I hope this dose not come back to the united states. More lives would be saved instead of destroyed if they made these cheaper or free like they have the flu shots free in America. I wonder how many people will try a other vaccine after this. I would be leary of it......: (

Rap?

Seriously? Christian rap is not good.

Beth H

I haven't heard of that other band but I absolutley LOVE NF. Yeah he's one of the only rappers I've heard that doesn't cuss.
Nadia, what do you mean?

@ Emilia. G

Here we go again.
How can a Christian listen to rap? That's what they play in night clubs and bars and other horrible places that I won't mention on here.

@ Emilia G

Shouldn't " one of the only rappers I've heard that doesn't cuss." warn you? That 'Oh maybe I shouldn't listen to something that has cussing in it normally?'

To Above

for a unbeliver that's normal but for a born again believer.....?..i don't get it...............

@ Emilia. G

Do you thin that it is rite for a Christian to drink alcohol?

Nadia A

I actually do. I don't think it's wrong for a christian to drink alcohol because, after all, Christ drank wine.
And NF's not a bad rapper. He justs raps about his life and his struggles. Why is it any different than any other music just because he's singing in a different tune. That's all a rapper is.

Nonobo

Christ did not drink with wine. We said the drunkard will take part in the lake of fire. And alcohol kills your taste buds so how after the people drank a lot how could they now that the grape jerce Jesus made tasted better that the original wine. Which was grape jerce.

Nadia A

Did the wine in the Bible contain alcohol?
Alcoholic beverages appear in the Hebrew Bible, after Noah planted a vineyard and became inebriated. In the New Testament, Jesus miraculously made copious amounts of wine at the marriage at Cana.

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this wine, this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

It is wrong to get drunk but it's not wrong to drink.

@ Emilia. G

Alcohol kills your taste buds. How could the people know that the second batch of "wine'' was better than the first?
John 2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
The ''wine'' was grape juice. And why would Jesus drink something that destroys so many lives?

1 Corinthians 6:10 Nor

1 Corinthians 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Nadia A

Why was the wine Jesus drank grape juice and the wine that the other people drank wasn't grape juice? Important people in the bible got drunk so were they drinking something different than Christ? And what does drinking have to do to listening to rap music?

To Above

I.give.........up....................???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

ANSWER THAT!

To Above

How did we even get into this conversation? We were talking about rappers and what does rap have to do with drinking?

To Above

Nothing just plz answer these questions.
Do they not play rap in night clubs?
Or bars?
Do they not ?
And answer the question a asked in the above comment.

To Above

They play all kinds of music in bars not just rap

@Emelia and NA

Okay I think rap is fine it’s just a song to a different beat. Alcohol: I don’t think that if a Christian drinks he is necessarily wicked but I personally wouldn’t! And the wine that Jesus drank was fermented just not as fermented as the wine of today!

Proverbs 20:1
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”

King James Version (KJV)

@NA

Where in the bible does it say rap is wrong? Also why would you listen to music when you know some music has swearing or things you don't agree with?

To Above

Hugh?'' why would you listen to music when you know some music has swearing or things you don't agree with?'' Was that to me? I don't listen to secular music let alone rap! That was invented to worship Satan. Not to worship Jesus.
I know about alcohol. My grandpa is/was and alcoholic so was my uncle a d my cousins are. I know about alcohol so don't try to tell me its OK to drink!

Both of my grandparents are

Both of my grandparents are alocholics, My parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends all drink and we're all christian. I know alcohol too and I know that it is not wrong to drink as long as you aren't getting drunk or letting it impair your judgment.

And how would you know that

And how would you know that rap was 'invented to worship satan'? Where in the bible does it say that? My parents are Christian as well and my mom and aunt actually took me and my cousins to NF's "Perception" concert.

@NA

Why do you think raps origins are of the Devil?

Nadia A

Both of my above comments were to Nadia A

@NA

Okay! So first everything I am saying isn't meant to be offensive! You listen to christian music do you not? So using your argument why would you listen to Christian music when secular music has language? You said why would you listen to Christian rap when most rap has language? Also does your family own guns? Do you celebrate Christmas? And alcohol I wasn't saying it was right, some of my relatives were alcoholics too I never even knew my Grandparents on my Dads side of the family! I just think we have to have an open mind about it! What Emilia said about alcohol I mostly agree with! Jesus said “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” but he also said  “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities”.

To Above

What do you mean as language? I said cussing. And I won't say if my family has a gun or not . Yes I do celebrate the birth of Christ but not Santa. I know your going to say that Christmas trees and such and such was a heathen traditional thing.
It is not OK for a Christian to drink. I don't want to desscus this anymore about alcohol.

@NA

I do not think it is necessarily wrong for Christians to drink alcohol but they need to be very careful, if they have self control and know they probably won't want to get drunk I think it's fine, but if they know they are tempted in that are they should not drink.
