Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has been showing her creative side once again. Her majesty has been hard at work on the costumes and set design for a new production of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen.”

The artsy queen is showcasing her latest creations at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, where “The Snow Queen” will play until early 2020.

Danish singer Oh Land composed the music for the show, with award-winning Russian dance expert Yuri Possokhov responsible for the choreography.

Is the queen nervous tonight?

Tivoli Ballet director Peter Bo Bendixen says, “Of course she is, of course. It’s very much her performance; it’s very much her production. If she was not nervous, something would be wrong.”

There’s no doubt Queen Margrethe was eager to do justice to “The Snow Queen.” After all, she is an expert who reveres the work of its author, Hans Christian Andersen.

“She, of everyone, is someone who also really is knowledgeable about Hans Christian Andersen and his fairy tales,” says Oh Land.

The legendary writer, who lived from 1805 to 1857, was truly was an artist. Do you recognize the names of some of his fairy tales?

• “The Emperor’s New Clothes”

• “The Little Mermaid”

• “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”

• “The Ugly Duckling”

• “The Little Match Girl”

• “Thumbelina”

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II comments on Hans Christian Andersen’s work: “He is extraordinary in the way that he can describe somebody in just half a sentence, and there you are. [‘The Snow Queen’ is] full of pictures, and colorful and these various people that are in the story, they all have very different personalities.”

Is the queen also truly an artist?

“I would say that the queen is an artist, because defining an artist is that you make art continually throughout your life and you do it in a professional capacity, and she is very much doing that,” says Oh Land.

Director Lars Liebst adds, “She always has an idea, she always has a goal, and it’s fun and it is very inspirational to work with her Majesty.”
