Frosty the snowman had an opportunity to hand out a life lesson to a would-be vandal earlier this week. A towering snowman constructed by Cody Lutz and his fiancée Lucy Sandifer in Petersburg, northern Kentucky, stood smiling and waving to neighbors and passersby—until a driver in a 4X4 tried to take him out.

If the snowman could talk, he might have advised the driver to “learn prudence.” (Proverbs 8:5)

Cody’s fiancée and her sister Laura were visiting from Mississippi over the snowy weekend. A delighted Lucy said it was the biggest snowfall she had ever experienced. The threesome enjoyed sledding, snowball fights, and making the most of the winter wonderland. Like most snow-lovers, that included building a snowman. To maximize size and stability, the crew used a massive stump in Lutz’s front yard as the base, packing snow around it. The result was a nine-foot-tall creation, decked out in the traditional top hat, smiling warmly.

Lutz says passing motorists waved and honked to express their appreciation for the big Frosty. But it seems not everyone was a fan. Lutz returned home Monday from his job at Answers in Genesis, where he is employed as an event coordinator, to find tire tracks through the snow. They stopped abruptly at the base of the snowman. The driver, no doubt, just as abruptly became aware of the imprudence of his or her choice. The impression of a vehicle’s bumper can be seen packed clearly into the snow remaining on the now-exposed stump.

The driver left the scene. Lutz is not aware of any injuries that might have occurred from the mischievous stunt.

Lutz isn’t angry about the attempted vandalism. But he sees an immediate biblical parallel that all can take as a warning. “You reap what you sow,” he says, referring to Galatians 6:7. But even if that is justice, Lutz went a little farther to reflect on the opportunity to forgive the errant motorist.

“If I get the chance to meet the driver, [I will] hopefully give him a taste of God’s grace and kindness! And have a good laugh about it too!” Cody says.

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. — Isaiah 1:18
