The holiday is celebrated annually on June 19. Juneteenth commemorates when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. That was about two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed the enslaved in Southern states.

That is really neat that the land has stayed in the family for so long! I also think it is crazy how long it took the news to get down to the bottom part of Texas.
