Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Oxford University Press' new edition of William Shakespeare's works will credit Christopher Marlowe as co-author of the three Henry VI plays. It’s further evidence that the playwright collaborated with others on some of his most famous works.
Marlowe was born in 1564, the same year as Shakespeare. He was a playwright, poet, and spy for Queen Elizabeth I. Now he’ll share billing in the latest version of the New Oxford Shakespeare being published this week.
Scholars have long suspected that Shakespeare's plays included the work of others. But new methods helped researchers conclude that sections bore Marlowe’s trademarks.
"Shakespeare, like other geniuses, recognized the value of other people," Gary Taylor, a professor at Florida State University and principal investigator of the new work, says. "What is Shakespeare famous for? Writing dialogue—interactions between two people. You would expect in his life there would be dialogue with other people."
In Shakespeare's time, there was great demand for new material for the first mass-entertainment industry. A relatively small group of authors worked feverishly to meet this demand.
A team of 23 scholars looked afresh at Shakespeare’s plays. They used computers to reveal language patterns, trends, and associations—analyzing not only Shakespeare's words, but also those of his fellow authors.
Oxford University Press editors concluded that 17 of 44 works associated with Shakespeare had input from others.
@Scarlett R
If Dekker wrote that one, I have never heard of it. His Circle Trilogy was pretty good, Thr3e was crazy mind bending, and Saint is really interesting.
@Amelia B
Oh yes! I forgot. I read The House, as well.
@Hesperus
No, I haven't read book zero, just the 6 in the main circle series. I started the first book of the series set before that one, I think it was either Green or Black, but I can't remember. I couldn't really get into that one. Those books that you've read of his sound interesting
@ Hesperus D
Mind-bending as sci-fi, complicated or just weird ideas?
@Hesperus
So what are these books even about? That y'all are talking about? Their titles don't really tell me anything...
@Amelia B
Oooooh, those books. I've read one of them, but the Circle Trilogy is the real core story, so I'd read Black, Red, and White, if you want to know the story. Green can be kinda disturbing, but it's one of the major links between most of his books.
@Bethy S
All three. lol
@Riley D
Uh, it would take forever to explain... Maybe just google Thr3e, since that isn't part of the big story? Most of his books are linked.
@Hesperus
Ok! XD
@Riley D
Well, I think I could explain it, but it'll ruin like half the story, so it's up to you.
@ Hesperus D
Uhm...okay.....
@Everyone
Hey, guys? I've been wanting to ask this for a long time, actually. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS "XD"????
@Scarlett
I had to ask the exact same thing when I joined. It is a sideways laughing face. The X stands for eyes squeezed shut in laughter, and the D is supposed to look like an open laughing mouth. Don't worry, I think we have pretty much ALL had to ask that! :)
@Hesperus
Don't worry about it if you don't want to. Just tell me, is it fantasy?
@Riley D
Haw haw haw, is it fantasy. It most def is, and well done, at that. (Unless, you don't define a guy waking up in one world and sleeping in the other, and vice versa as fantasy)
@Bethy S
No really. You pretty much nailed with all three. It's categorized under sci-fi, I think, it is very complicated, and as for weird ideas... he's pretty much in a class of his own.
@Bethy S
*nailed it. Oh, and, this guy's a Christian author, to boot.
@ Hesperus D
Oh, okay. Thanks!
@ Scarlett & Riley
Ikr!!! (Oops.) I know right!!! I think I just waited until someone else asked on here, or maybe I found out because (I really wanted to just do bc, but then I realized I would fail this comment even more! Lol. Ugh! :) my cousin was using texting lingo and I had no clue what she meant!
This is Mylee
@XD When we started texting on here like no one knew what it was. They were like what's XD .... :0
@NADIA i watched the Bible bee streams and i saw you !!!!!!!! It was cool getting to see what someone on WT looked like :)
How was getting to see Hallie and Allison ??? !!!!!
This is Mylee
@XD well some ppl knew it but a lot of WT ppl figured it out XD.....
@Bethy S
Well, I'm on your side at least with the text lingo, lol XD. (winks).
@Mylee, what's that? Is Nadia an actress too?
.
Mylee, yes, do you just go to the website?
Scarlett, thank you! :)
@Above
@Hesperus: Ok thanks. I am not much of a fantasy person. I don't like reading it and i don't like writing it much either! :)
@Bethy: Yeah I know! My friend actually writes like that in my letters I get from her, and so it is like deciphering it! Like 'osm' is awesome, and things like that. Annoying sometimes! When I text, I am sure to spell out the words how they were meant to be spelled, unless I am in a big hurry.
@Riley D
Oh. ... *chuckles* Nvm then!
This is Mylee
@Scarlett no she is not an actress XD. Bible Bee is a competition its like memorizing verses and studying the Bible. :)
@Mylee
Oh. That's cool tho! Never heard of that. Did Nadia do a good job?
Riley
I do that too in texting, except when I purposely use abbreviations jokingly when I text my brother.
@Above
@Hesperus: Thx anyway. ;)
@Bethy: Yeah. I can read it faster when the words are just all typed out like they should be! XD
Riley
Exactly!
:)
I'm back! @Riley, I'm actually slower at texting it in texting lingo now, instead of just spelling out the words and trying to put good punctuation!
@Caroline
Exactly!
@ Caro
Same!
@ Scarlett
I did the Bible Bee (well the Summer study part.) I hadn't heard of it before Nadia told me about it but it's really good!
Happy (late) Thanksgiving!!
Happy (late) Thanksgiving!!
@ Scarlett
Thank you, and happy belated Thanksgiving to you too!
:)
Happy first day of Advent, and belated Thanksgiving! :)
@Caro
Back at you! Belated! :)
@All: What are y'all's favorite genre to read? I have started liking historical fiction a lot more, as well as just fictional books that aren't fantasy, but not historical at all too. I like to call them "real life fiction" because they are about people in their life, but it is fiction, not historical people. Does that make sense? that is what I like to write as well.
This is Mylee
i like mystery
@Riley D
Wow, I never would have guessed you were the type who likes to torture people, lol! That's so hard to answer, but I would agree that "real life fiction" is always fun. Cookbooks don't count, but I love them anyway :). Mystery, Sci-fi, and certain historical fiction books are really good.
@Caro
BTW, the second TT is on a roll!! I'm hoping that I can publish another book soon.
Riley
I think I know what you mean, like books set in modern (or other) times but with realistic, made-up characters? I favorite to read as well as write is epic, high fantasy\adventure.
@Riley
Oh the pain in having to try and put what I like to read in words XD Anything and everything really. I have phases, but I always love a good fantasy story (especially if it has dragons!) I also love books with epic sword fights and battles (so kinda like what Bethy said. I also like historic and realistic fiction, and books with a dash of romance. I’m always looking for book suggestions so if anyone has any let me know
@Everyone
For those of you into fantasy I just read this really good book called Heartless by Elizabeth Anne Stengl, it’s the first in a series, Tales of Goldstone Wood, and she’s a Christian author. There’s another book I just started that’s written by a bunch of different authors who call themselves A fellowship of fantasy. It’s an anthology called Fantastic creatures and all the stories I’ve read so far are clean. I like reading it because now I’m finding new authors to look into
@Amelia B
I love dragons too!! I want one :). A nice one, I mean. One that has enough manners not to eat the chickens, lol. I would agree that a little romance is okay in books. People fall in love, that's the way God designed humans. But I don't like books that are all about it.
@All
Haha I didn't mean to torture y'all! XD Cool!
@Amelia B: I have been reading some Civil War historic fiction lately, and here are some good books: Drummer Boy of Vicksburg, Wind on the River, Silent Thunder, In My Father's House. I really liked the last one. It is about a Southern family that has to live through the war, and the main focus is one of the daughters, Oscie Mason, and the book starts when she is seven and ends when she is going to see her betrothed who was wounded in the war, she is like 20 or so then.
@ Amelia
Oh wow, that sounds really cool! I'll have to look it up!
:)
@Riley, I like low fantasy, dystopian, and historical fiction (especially about girls!) ! @Scar, that's awesome! Once it's published I'll get it probably! I like romance in books, and I really like christian romances too. :)
@Everyone
I'll be in Texas until Monday, so have fun while I'm gone. The internet may work there or it may not. I'm excited :).
:)
Bye, Scar! Have fun!
