Amazon is ordering tens of thousands of electric delivery vans. That has two companies gearing up for increased production. Could orders that large affect the entire auto industry?
Amazon has ordered 1,800 e-vans from Mercedes-Benz in Europe. That’s a big order. But the retail giant also asked for 100,000 more from U.S. start-up Rivian. That’s downright huge—especially for an industry that has struggled to make an affordable, popular vehicle.
But Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ shiny new vans aren’t just about delivering more products faster. Bezos hopes the switch to electric will help the environment too.
Researchers know the transport sector—planes, trains, trucks, and cars—is a major source of pollution. And the way deliveries from online retailers like Amazon are surging, air quality is likely to keep suffering.
Balancing concerns about the Earth and human progress can get complicated. Sometimes God gets left entirely out of the picture. As almighty Creator, God controls His universe. But He expects humans to act as responsible caretakers. (Genesis 1:26)
To meet demand from Amazon, Rivian is designing its most efficient vehicle (EV) ever. CEO RJ Scaringe says the new EV “includes . . . systems to make it easier for the drivers to focus on operating the vehicle [and] removes the need for extra devices that provide address and mapping information.” Drivers will also be able to consult Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant instead of keying commands into a handheld device.
Amazon hopes EVs will begin delivering U.S. packages next year. The company plans to have 10,000 electric vehicles in use “as early as 2022 and all 100,000 vehicles on the road by 2030.”
Scaringe predicts that Amazon’s big order will probably have an “echo effect.” That is, other EV producers will re-evaluate their own systems.
“Amazon’s pledge [to buy electric vans] shows there’s important demand for e-vehicles,” says Lucien Mathieu, an e-mobility and transport analyst.
Economies of scale are the cost advantages of making more of a product. This economic principle says that the more a company makes of something—shirts, eyeglasses, food, electric vehicles, etc.—the more the cost per unit decreases. Producing more allows for bulk buying and increased speed and improved technique from repetition. These and other factors help drive prices down.
Researchers believe economies of scale in the EV industry will bring prices down for everyone. In turn, that could make e-autos more popular. If that happens, automakers will begin making more of them. Consumers will begin buying more of them. Electric vehicles could supply a much-needed jolt to the sluggish transportation industry.
I saw one that look exactly
I saw one that look exactly like that, I don't know if it was electric or not though.
Hi
That is SO COOL !

I don't think I have see these before. But then again, where I live, our Amazon packages come on the UPS trucks.
YAY
I think they are super cool and way better for the air.
I See These All Time
in my neighborhood we probably see one once a day, not sure if they use gas of not
That would be convinient
That would be nice if the bulk buying really did bring the prices down, electric cars are so expensive... :(
GO EVS!
It's cool something big like Amazon did something to help preserve the earth.

Please Note: This has nothing to do with this topic. It is just something my mom told me a while ago.
@ N&M. A
So did I! where I've been seeing them for awhile, I think since last year. But same Idk if they are electric or not.
@Caden W: What is a cent console? Guessing it has something to do with video games? I'm not allowed to play video games. My mom used to say that they rot your brains or something xD.
Video games
Video games actually have been proven to have health beneifts as well as being a good way to be entertained. Unlike TV, you are constantly thinking while playing, in fact, most gamers use more of their brain at once then average work! This, when done in a healthy way, creates a faster brain, I am not saying to play 14 hours a day, but your brain actually gets faster, it is like a mental workout. Also, TV you are using none of your brain almost! Gamers very rarly eat while gaming, and put it off til later. There are no health problems that come from gaming that do not come from sports or regular life. Also, Eye strain can be helped with certian monitor settings and glasses. I personally have it set so my monitor is warmer, since blue light is what casues eye strain mostly. Gaming also has Carrers, High school esports players often get up to 400k schalorships. Gaming also helps current carrers, studys show that surgens make %90 less mistakes while operating if they are avid gamers.
@Matthew N
Wow. Okay. Umm. Still not allowed to play them but cool! I've only played Minecraft at my cousin's house which didn't really interest me. I prefer reading and school for mental exercise, but now I know another way to exercise my brain xD.
this is Mylee
We Have a van just like that the same kind!!! Well except Ford brand and that is the up top one we have the medium roof top !!! About gaming IDK what the cent consule is even though we have a lot of nintendo counsoles. Gaming yes is better for you brain then movies but reading is better lol !
I see.
I see that van deliver our packages sometimes.
This is Serena
Wow, that's cool how Amazon is trying to help the environment by using EV's! I think I saw something like that before near my neighborhood but I'm wondering if it was electric. I wonder how they would use the Alexa in the car though. Like, would they ask to set temp. in the care at like 71 degrees? Or to set their GPS to a certain address...
I think that the electric
I think that the electric concept van is kinda ugly, I mean like the windows are way to large and the tiers are super boring and bland, and the head lights are really.... um interesting, plus the bottom of the van looks like it's plastic so body wouldn't last as long as it would of if it was mettle, and the plastic will fade eventually and make look even worse, and I just don't like the shape of the over all van. But I do like the van that Amazon currently has.
No offense to any body but I don't think that electric vehicles are a over all plus to the Earth, it might help the air some, but the batteries that they put in them can not disintegrate, so that they stay in the dump and clutter up the earth. And they release bad toxins I think in to the ground.
Yeah I know I sound a bit harsh on the vans and the Electric cars and stuff.
P.S My brother is a car nerd so yeah a lot of that has rubbed off onto me....unfortunately.
Me and my brothers have a
Me and my brothers have a game where when we see a Prime van we say "Prime". I don't know why, it's just fun.
@Nora L
I bet the van's feelings are so hurt right now.....lol jk.
@Above
I fully agree with Naomi D about video games. I am not allowed to play them, because a lot of time they have bad things in them. And anyway, I find it much more fun and healthy to read a book or be outside than to stare at a screen. But hey, if some of y'all like video games, then that is okay. It is YOUR choice, and we all have different opinion. I am fine with that.
ummmmm
how in the world did we get on the topic of video games?
@Caden W: im very curious what a "cent console" is by the way.
