It’s official: Magneto is a good citizen. This New Yorker strolls the streets calmly, unfazed by the sights and sounds of the busy city. Horn honks, sidewalk trash, subway smells, touchy passersby—Magneto takes it all in stride. Magneto is a good dog. And his owner has the papers to prove it.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognizes dogs that demonstrate good citizenship. The official title for these city-wise pups is Urban Canine Good Citizen. The Urban CGC is one of four titles the AKC gives for doggie citizenship.
Dogs must have a registered AKC number and pass the basic Canine Good Citizen test before being allowed to take the urban version of the exam.
The basic test has been around for about 25 years. More than 700,000 dogs have passed. The urban version requires a bit more self-restraint on the part of the pooch.
AKC officials administer the Urban CGC test in tough city settings. Streets, cars, noises, elevators, outdoor cafes, and other distractions are all part of the real-world exam.
Dogs perform a 10-step test of skills. For example, they must wait patiently for “walk” lights at pedestrian crossings, clamber in and out of cars or taxis, and ignore tempting street food. Two of the most difficult parts of the test involve a dog’s tolerating hugs and strokes from strangers and remaining still while its owner browses in a dog-friendly shop.
Some people think the test of doggie etiquette is barking up the wrong tree. “It’s more that the owners could step up their game,” observed one New Yorker.
Why do owners put their dogs through these urban paces? For one thing, it’s a way to “consider others,” as in Philippians 2:3. But additionally, from a practical point of view, some people believe good dog behavior will pay off. Some homeowners’ insurers have agreed to cover certain breeds with the basic canine good citizen title according to the AKC. Further, some think the Urban CGC title might help get a beloved pet into the best co-ops and condos.
What does the pooch get for its efforts? The AKC awards each dog that successfully passes the citizenship test the suffix “CGC” after its name—that and a doggie treat.
Some canines will do anything to stay out of the doghouse.

That's fine! :)

Here's a picture of Simon! (Garfunkel is the black and white one you only can see a part of.)

Do the animals that come already have names? Or do the staff members named them, I thought Garfunkel was a really unusual name for a animal
( Emily H)
When you go there to help, do you have a routine of stuff? Or just anything that shows up? I think its really cool that you can help all these animals in need!
Emily H.
Most of the time, the animals come with names; sometimes the staff members change them. One time a dog was named Camel when he came to Loving Heart! (They changed his name to Merlin; he's since been adopted.)
I think Simon and Garfunkel were popular singers.
When I go to volunteer, sometimes some jobs may have already been done. If these jobs haven't been done, I usually clean the cats' condos, let the dogs outside, and clean the dogs' cages. Other times, if there's another volunteer or some jobs have already been done, I'll ask one of the ladies there what needs to be done or I'll ask some questions about starting a shelter.
gabrielle p.
When a person starts a shelter, they'll need a Board of Directors; the Board must consist of four people: the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer.
Between me and my sister (if she decides to help me out and if I continue down this shelter path), we'll already have a President and a Treasurer; that means that we'll just need a Vice President and a Secretary in order to have the essential members of the Board.
If, say, a lawyer joined the Board, we could get free services. If a vet joined the board, we would probably get discounts for vet care.
gabrielle p.
Which position on the Board of Directors (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) would you think you would be good at?
In that PDF file, they have bylaws that you can reproduce for your own purposes. Here are what the different positions on the Board responsible for:
The president shall convene regularly scheduled board meetings, shall preside or arrange for other members of the Executive Committee to preside at each meeting in the following order: vice-president, secretary, treasurer.
The vice-president shall chair committees on special subjects as designated by the board.
The secretary shall be responsible for keeping records of board actions, including overseeing the taking of minutes at all board meetings, sending out meeting announcements, distributing copies of minutes and the agenda to each board member, and assuring that corporate records are maintained.
The treasurer shall make a report at each board meeting. The treasurer shall chair the finance committee, assist in the preparation of the budget, help develop fundraising plans, and make financial information available to board members and the public.
Here is what an Executive Committee is:
Executive Committee: The four officers serve as the members of the Executive Committee. Except for the power to amend the articles of incorporation and bylaws, the Executive Committee shall have all the powers and authority of the board of directors in the intervals between meetings of the board of directors, and is subject to the direction and control of the full board.
Gabrielle p.
The Vice President shall also fill in for the President if the President is unable to attend a meeting; in such cases, the Vice President shall have the power of the President.
gabrielle p.
Here is what the Financial Committee is:
Finance Committee: The treasurer is the chair of the Finance Committee, which includes three other board members. The Finance Committee is responsible for developing and reviewing fiscal procedures, fundraising plan, and annual budget with staff and other board members. The board must approve the budget and all expenditures must be within budget. Any major change in the budget must be approved by the board or the Executive Committee. The fiscal year shall be the calendar year. Annual reports are required to be submitted to the board showing income, expenditures, and pending income. The financial records of the organization are public information and shall be made available to board members and the public.
Gabrielle p.
The four officers are the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Know that I think about it, I think I heard of the singers before, do they have a song called The sound Of Silence? Do you have a fav animal at the shelter? I think I would just love them all! My grandpa has like, 350 goats, And the Kids are the cutest things ever!
I mean "now"
I mean "now"
Emily H.
I don't really know; I've never heard of Simon and Garfunkel before.
Emily H.
Right, now, I've got to say that Sawyer the puppy is my favorite. He's mostly white with two blue eyes. Although he'll rumble and tumble with his littermates sometimes, he loves to cuddle and is a really sweet, laid back boy.
Emily h.
But every one of the animals is special in their own way. :)
Emily h.
That's A LOT of goats to have! Does anybody ever get ringworm from them? (I went to a zoo camp last year and came home with ringworm on my arm; the goats at the zoo had gotten loose one day and I had to carry some of them back into the pen--I'm wondering if I got it from the goats. I'm over the ringworm now.)
( Emily H)
No, None of us have ever gotten ringworm before, but every now and then we have to worm them. Is there a photo of Sawyer I could see? I agree! Paint is laid back to, but once he knows who is boss he backs of. Al ot of times when there is something new that frightens him, he gets skittish, But that is why I love the animals, not a single one is the same!
Emily h.
I've included a picture of Sawyer. He has grown a bit since the picture was taken, but he's still as cute!
https://scontent.ford1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/13133123_101538402166335...
Emily h.
Who is Paint? Is he one of the goats?
Emily h.
And here's a picture of Simon and Garfunkel; I think they got the names mixed up with the pictures, because, last I knew, the brown and white one was Simon and the black and white one was Garfunkel.

emily h.
If I do end up starting a shelter in the future, would you be at all interested in becoming a Board member or helping out some way?
( Emily H)
Paint is the horse I usually ride, Sure! I would love to help out with the shelter, but my life is in God's hands :)
emily h.
That's a great answer. :)
................................wow
Are we just trying to get the most comments possible?
( Emily H)
Gee, 745 comments! Is this a record or something?
Justin T. (The bro)
Wow! I must have been gone a long time! You guys had probably broken the record for th most comments in a world teen article! It's actually really cool! A little advice, this article is going to disappear soon. If you want to continue the conversation, go to another article that no one comments on much and continue it there
Justin T.
I know. Or we could just type the name of the article in the search box and continue commenting from there. :)
( Emily H)
I was just about to say that!!!!!!!
Justin T. (The bro) to Rebekah S
I didn't know you could do that lol actually thanks because I wanted to look for a few articles
( Emily H)
They are all so cute! In horse terms sawyer's eyes would be called " Glass Eyes" or " Wall eyes" Do they have a term they use in dog terms, or is it just blue eyes? I think it is amazing how all animals have diffrent traits and looks!
Olivia H
AWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!! Sawyer, Simon and Garfunkel are all SO cute! :) By the way, Sawyer is a really cute name for a puppy.
Emily H.
No, I don't believe so. Sawyer and one of his brothers, Sherman, got neutered yesterday and returned to the shelter today--they're still happy, playful puppies!
emily h.
So as it turns out, Garfunkel is the brown and white dog and Simon is the black and white dog--there was a bit of a name mix-up when I first met them!
Guys
We own 600 acres so a we have a little room for horses. Don't know about the bays breed. I didn't have time to read all of your conversation but I got the idea that you either started, own, want to start, our just think it would be cool to have a vet/shelter for cats and dogs? Anyway I would like to help if I could. I have a Chocolate lab (8) and a dapple doxen (4 months) (don't know how to spell that) that at the moment is on my lap. The lab is mine and the doxen is my moms. Anyway can y'all get me up to speed on what your doing with using less than 700+ comments?
You guys
You need a pr too. And also once you get stock like animal food or stuff like that you will need a supplies coordinator. And when I said I could help I mean financially to. I can do 25$ a week just give me your treasurers his/her address. I think that Rebecca would be good at vp and Gab (can i abbr. your name?) be President. BTW the secretary has a lot of paper work. The Treasurer needs to be someone you can trust since they are handling money. How old are you Rebecca and Gab?
preston h.
Wow--that's a mouthful! :)
Doxen is actually spelled Dachshund.
I'm in 8th grade; how old are you?
preston h.
Where did you get your dogs?
600 acres is a lot of land!
Rebekah S
I'm so sorry I haven't gotten back to you at all. This was my last week of school and I'm trying to catch up on a few subjects, I also had the end of 4H and music too, so I apologize from the bottom of my heart. :( I am going to start working on a mission statement as soon as I can, and I'll send you what I have when it's ready. :) Since I am planning on going into the veterinary field, I think that might be a good place for me in our shelter. On the Board of Directors I don't know yet, I'll think about it and get back to you on that one. Simon and Garfunkel are adorable!! The under-bite reminds me of my Chihuahua mix's under-bite. I hope that answers about everything I've missed.
Emily H
Simon and Garfunkel do have a song called Sound of Silence, sorry to jump in your conversation.
Preston H
You can abbreviate my name, I don't mind. I'm 16 and I'm going into my junior year of high school. How old are you, and what grade are you in? :)
Rebekah S
I'll take a look at that documentary. Knowing me, I'll probably cry. :)
( Emily H)
Cool! When our cats got fixed, they came back home a little moody, but after a couple days they were their normal selfs. You should really get members on board! Who knows, this shellter may be the biggest one around in several years from now :) Preston H, were do you live?
Justin T. (The bro) to Rebekah S
Um, I'm a little embarrassed to say this but can you tell me where the search bar is for world teen? Or are you talking about the internet search bar? I know it may sound like a stupid question, but I seriously can't find it. Can you only see it when you use world teen on a laptop, cause I'm using my kindle
Justin t.
That's totally fine. :)
If you use a computer, find the red tab that has Home, About, Top Stories, Videos, Galleries, Topics, Issues, and Contact on it. Look all the way to the right and click the thing at the very end. After you click it, you should be able to type in whatever you are looking for. Good luck! : )
gabrielle p.
I understand--that's fine. :) I thought that maybe you had to renew your account or something like that.
Shelter update for yesterday:
Sammie and Sylvester the puppies have gone to their forever homes. Shelby's adopters dropped out at the last minute because they didn't want to housetrain her, but there are other approved applications for Shelby. I was supposed to go on a home visit with Shelby. I'm also supposed to be going on a home visit with Sawyer.
Harper the pit bull mix has had 3 or 4 surgeries for her cherry eye and nothing has really helped; she's a super sweet girl that loves people, but DOES NOT like other dogs or cats.
Loving Heart was supposed to get another kitten yesterday.
Hercules is doing well in his foster home, although he needs to gain more weight.
The puppies' mom, Sasha, is in a foster home and doing well. The staff at LHAS are hoping that the fosterer will fall in love.
Isaac the dog is back--remember him (he has the cute under bite)? His adopter returned him because they got a puppy even thought they knew Isaac didn't get along well with other dogs. All was going well until Isaac, for no apparent reason, attacked the puppy and bit the adopter's husband; I don't know if she was just all shocked at it and stretched the truth, but the adopter said that the puppy had to have emergency care. So now, Isaac is back and is SUPER stressed--turns out the adopters thought the puppy was more important. Here is a recent picture of Isaac:

It would be great if the shelter would be one of the biggest around, but for now Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is the biggest.
Before we can get members on board, we all need to finish our schoolwork and learn lots more. Maybe we will all keep commenting on World Teen until we're old enough or something like that.
preston h.
No, we haven't started a shelter yet, but we would like to.
gabrielle p.
I have started on a Policy, Procedure, and Operations Manual. So far it covers basic operations, stray animals, intake of cats, intake of dogs, and adoptions of animals; I am currently working on care of cats.
Gabrielle p., Preston h., and Emily h.
Even though it would be cool to have our own facility when we first start a shelter, I don't think it would be all that possible. We would have to get lots of funds and find the right building for our purposes. That building would have to include a lobby, a cat quarantining area, a dog quarantining area, a cat area, a dog area, an office area, a storage area, a small kitchen, a place for the dogs to run outside and be trained, an office area, and a restroom. While custom-built would be wonderful, I just don't see how there would be enough money for that.
New article
When the next issue of World Teen comes out, this article will be removed from Pop Smart. How about we continue commenting on a newer Pop Smart article, "Making Soda Cool"? It would be quite a while before that article disappeared from Pop Smart.
What do you think?
